Highlands Education International (HEI) is a faith-based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, registered in the United States and in Nigeria. It was established in 1982 to provide educational opportunities for students in remote and rural areas with the intent of raising educational standards and developing a new generation of leaders in Nigeria.

HEI school is located on 150 acres of rolling picturesque landscape in the Cameroun mountains of northeastern Nigeria on the Mambila Plateau, in Gembu, Taraba State. The school is in an area that is rich in minerals and known for its natural beauty and temperate climate which makes it ideal for learning.  We operate on a semester system, with two semesters per year: the first semester runs from August to December and the second semester runs from January to May. Three schools are being developed on one location (Preschool, Primary, and Secondary). The schools each have their own principal but function with a central human resources and administration. Academic staff come from all over Nigeria and other countries.

HISTORY

In 1981, while teaching at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), the Soremekun family took a vacation to the Mambila Plateau in then Gongola state. They all fell in love with the sheer beauty of the place and the “breath of fresh air” from their normal lives. They also saw a genuine need for educational facilities. Upon returning to Ife, they sensed God’s call to live and work on the plateau. Thus, Highland Education was born in 1982. They began to form a network of others who shared the vision and desire to invest in the lives of children for a better tomorrow. They found that the beauty of Mambila naturally awakens the creative spirit and is an excellent place to study and learn.

From this initial trip to Mambila, the logo for HEI was born. Each member of the family came up with the parts of the plateau that they associated with most: the rugged mountains, the birds, the building blocks, and the circle surrounding the logo.
