HEI offers a full array of academic programs and services
Over 500 students are enrolled in HEI. Preschool (180), Primary (200), and Secondary (150). We have just completed the 14th year for the school which began in 2009. A strong academic program is presented in each school, with agriculture, religious studies, computer, and trades courses (marketing, carpentry, tailoring, electrical) also offered with a more practical focus. The school is moving towards adding a university level.
HEI also owns and operates a farm that produces a wide range of fruits (pineapples, bananas, plantains, mangos, papayas, avocados, guavas, and cashews). Other industries on the rise are fishery and poultry. Agriculture students also get to practice Animal Husbandry with the approximately 10 cows and 40 sheep that we own and house on the property.
The examination system determines promotion to the next level in all schools. The preschoolers exit with a Preschool Leaving Certificate, primary students take the HEI Common Entrance Examination, secondary students take the West African Examination Council (WAEC) exam – Jr. WAEC and Sr. WAEC. HEI has been approved as a WAEC testing center. In addition to WAEC, HEI has started awarding high school diplomas at graduation. HEI graduated its first senior high school class in 2016.
Families are very important to us at HEI. We involve them in as many ways as possible. Each semester we have a parent seminar on an issue that is relevant to parenting (i.e., “Financing Your Child’s Education,” “Common Illnesses,” “Nutrition and Health”). Other events include parent-teacher conferences, special events (Christmas, Easter), sports activities, etc.
The Highlands paradigm for educational development begins in early childhood with integrated curriculum linkages to primary, secondary, and university levels. We endeavor to keep students in the system (preschool to university) with careful nurture and monitoring. University level is being considered.

In October HEI students participate in United Nations Day to raise their awareness about international issues and peacemaking.
During the annual Cultural Arts Festival, all major cultures on the Mambila Plateau are encouraged to participate by dressing in their cultural costumes and sharing other expressions of their respective cultures.
HEI Parents and teachers meet every semester to discuss student success strategies.
Each year HEI divides students into two houses (blue or yellow) that compete in a variety of sports activities including relay races, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, sack races, etc. Winners and administrators get certificates and awards.
Preschoolers and high schoolers graduate every year from HEI. We recognize these achievements and celebrate them with students, faculty, families, and the community.
Primary students have an Activity Forum every week to improve their understanding of science by spelling and answering questions. Secondary students have weekly Debate Forums where they learn to engage in healthy debate on of a variety of current topics. Forum winners are recognized.
HEI holds parent seminars each semester on topics that are of concern to both. Seminars cover a broad range of topics to include health and finance.
The Science Fair is held annually to increase students’ understanding and awareness about science. Students undertake exploratory projects that are judged. Students who win earn various prizes.
The Common Entrance Exam is administered by HEI for students moving from primary to secondary school. Students graduating from senior secondary school take the West African Examination Council (WAEC) exam. HEI is a WAEC Center.
The church at HEI offers year-round programs for staff, students, and the community.
The peoples of Mambila Plateau are often described as the forgotten people of Nigeria. Families struggle to survive. Poverty, Malaria, Typhoid, and other diseases define the lives of most children. You can make a difference by ensuring that one child can get tuition, uniform, books, activities, and first aid.
Highlands Education International (HEI) is a faith-based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, registered in the United States and in Nigeria.
