Professor Fola Soremekun was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria on October 10, 1934. He came to the United States to attend college in 1956 and ultimately earned his Ph.D. in history from Northwestern University. He married Elizabeth Wallace in 1966. In 2012, he retired from over 50 years of teaching History at colleges and universities across America, Africa, and other parts of the world. Dr. Fola is the author of numerous scholarly works, most recently including American Boy: A Life Inspired by American Ideals. He has three children and five grandchildren and currently resides in Gembu, Taraba state, Nigeria.
Professor Elizabeth Soremekun was born in Aberdeen, Mississippi, U.S. on October 17, 1946. She graduated from Shivers High, Aberdeen, as valedictorian in 1963 with a dream to become a missionary in Africa and attain the highest degree she could. She attended Western Michigan University where she earned a B.A. in Sociology in 1967 and ultimately earned her Ph.D. in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1979. After marrying Fola, they lived and worked in the U.S., Zambia, and Nigeria for many years. In 2005, she retired from close to 40 years of teaching. Dr. Soremekun has authored numerous published works and is the primary administrator of HEI school. She is working on publishing her autobiography called “African Girl,” a companion book to “American Boy,” next year. She has three children and five grandchildren and currently resides in Gembu, Taraba state, Nigeria.
